Large Globe

This airon/aluminium Globe is a spherical map, or scale model of the Earth. On a globe, the proportions in size, shape and distance between countries and continents are correct, which is not possible with a flat map.
In the past, globes were much more than simply models: they were tools for sharing and disseminating knowledge about the planet and the universe. With parts of them, such as the horizon ring and the meridian ring, astronomical phenomena could be calculated. A globe has an axis through the poles, allowing it to rotate.
